Mother Bev Hansen said the friend had been left traumatised by the incident.
She said the pair left a party in Hopetoun Street early on Saturday morning and had a disagreement on the direction they were headed.
“The friend was walking in front of Daniel when car lights approached towards them on the Olympic Highway,” Mrs Hansen said.
“He heard a thud and turned around to see Daniel had fallen over, hitting his head,” she said.
The car was not far behind, hitting Daniel who died at the scene.
Police are still waiting on the results of a mandatory drug and urine test conducted on a Coolamon woman, 51, who was driving through to Melbourne.
