The bushfire, which started at 2.30pm, is three hectares in size and is burning in a deep gully of heavy bushland.
Authorities are awaiting the arrival of a dozer to put in fire trails around the blaze.
“There’s plenty of trucks and firefighters but they can’t actually do anything at the moment,” Insp Marg Wehner said.
“The conditions are pretty damp and not condusive to fire... it’s not going anywhere.”
Insp Wehner said no houses or buildings were in any danger including Peregrines function centre at Table Top Mountain.
When The Border Mail called the function centre just before 4pm, the owner said she could see smoke.
The fire started as a result of a lightning strike.
Insp Wehner said several fires had started in the area but the majority were easily extinguished because they were in open country.
