Leading Melbourne trainers Peter Moody, David Hayes, Michael Moroney and Mick Price were all among the 23 nominations, down from 27 last year.
Several runners, including the Mick Kent trained Domesky, Auld Burns, Chasm, Elusive King, Flashy Fella and Lordoftheparrots are also nominated for races on Saturday’s Australian Guineas program at Flemington.
Wangaratta Turf Club manager Paul Hoysted said while he was buoyed by the nominations, the club was mindful most runners were nominated for multiple races.
“It’s always hard to tell with nominations because a lot of trainers like to nominate for several meetings before making a decision,” Hoysted said.
“Flemington is on Saturday plus there is also Bendigo and Albury on Sunday.
“But to have Moody, Hayes and Price amongst the nominations is pleasing.”
The club is encouraging patrons to enjoy the weekend in Wangaratta with the city also set to host the NAB clash between Richmond and Essendon on Saturday.
On the Sunday racegoers have the choice between two dining packages, the Carlton Draught Footy and Race Goers Marquee or the Utlimate dining package.
TVN’s Jason Richardson will be host of the Ultimate dining package with Brownlow medallist Shane Crawford the guest speaker at both marquees.
Everyone who attends the meeting will also receive an entry ticket into the draw for the chance of walking away with up to $50,000 extra on the day.
Gates open at 11.30am with the first race on the eight-race card set to be run at 1.25pm.
A free shuttle bus service will also operate to transfer patrons to and from the meeting.
