Rutherglen, Wahgunyah jewellery theft link probe

DETECTIVES are investigating a link between jewellery stolen from a home at Wahgunyah last week and an $80,000 jewellery heist from the homes of two bereaved Rutherglen men in October.

Wodonga police Detective Acting Sgt Andrew Leonard said a home in Barkly Street, Wahgunyah, was broken into between 8am and 5.30pm last Thursday while the occupant was away.

He said about $4000 in rings, gold bracelets, pendants, earrings and necklaces were taken from a bedroom drawer after burglars got in through a back door.

The burglary comes more than four months after $80,000 in jewellery was taken from two homes in Rutherglen.

The jewellery belonged to the recently deceased wives of the men.

Sgt Leonard said police would examine if the Wahgunyah and Rutherglen burglaries were connected.

The Rutherglen burglaries remain unsolved and Sgt Leonard said investigations were continuing.

He urged anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious at Wahgunyah to phone police.

Information can be given anonymously to Wodonga detectives on (02) 6049 2600 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
