Whitfield man hurt in crash

A WHITFIELD man aged in his mid-70s was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital last night after his car hit a tree off the Wangaratta-Whitfield road.

The man was driving south when his car left the road about five kilometres out of Whitfield about 6.30pm.

He was thrown from the car after impact.

An off-duty nurse was first on the scene.

Police from Wangaratta and Whitfield and paramedics arrived soon after.

Acting Sgt Ben D’Ornay said the man was badly hurt.

He had been in a serious but stable condition before he was flown to Melbourne.

The road was shut for 45 minutes while the air ambulance helicopter landed on the road.

Police don’t yet know what caused the crash.
