Police say the man was accidentally shot at Yundool near Benalla about 5.30pm on Saturday, the opening day of the Victorian duck hunting season.
The boy was hunting at the time, police say.
The man received non-life-threatening injuries.
Police have spoken to the boy and his father and are investigating the incident.
The Herald Sun have named the man who was shot as 71-year-old local farmer Rod Squires.
The newspaper said Mr Squires had surgery to remove a slug from his calf and is recovering at home.
