$1.5m price tag on The Pines

DEVELOPERS say Indigo Council can buy The Pines buildings at Mayday Hills for their offices for $1.5 million — or $500,000 if it offered to take over the extensive gardens.

On Tuesday night councillors voted to delay a decision on the refurbishment of its rundown and cramped Beechworth offices to investigate the proposal.

All councillors received a copy of the offer on Monday, just 24 hours before a decision was to be made on a $900,000 spend on the town hall block.

The Border Mail can reveal The Pines offer includes the 800 square metre former reception centre, the cricket oval and some other land.

Mayor Barb Murdoch said yesterday the council needed time to investigate the offer.

She hoped this would be done by the April council meeting.

“It would basically mean shifting the Beechworth offices to Mayday Hills,” she said.

“Look, it’s a great building but I will defer to the experts as to whether it suits our needs or in fact can be done.”

Meanwhile, the council has confirmed it will build a new Yackandandah office with changes such as excluding Ardsville and selling it, while investigating using other buildings to compensate.
