DEFENDING Border Mail footy tipping competition champion Stephen Franzini has “no confidence whatsoever” of finishing first this season.
But the Geelong-mad Mr Franzini has warmed to the idea of The Border Mail’s bold new concept.
In a first, this year’s winner won’t necessarily tip the most winners.
A points system, based on the odds of a team’s chances, will be used to score a person’s round.

“Conceivably, you could tip less winners but get more points,” The Border Mail’s advertising manager Craig Cleary said yesterday.
“I reckon it will keep people interested for a lot longer.
“Normally people who have a bad start give up because they can’t recover.
“With this system, you’re a much better chance of catching up.”
For “gut tipsters” like Mr Franzini, the appeal of picking an upset is enhanced.
“Picking an upset is great but you only get one point for it. This will make it interesting,” Mr Franzini said.
First prize will be an all-expenses-paid AFL grand final experience and the chance to win $1 million. The under-18 competition prize is a $1000 Harvey Norman voucher, second is $500 at ReConnect Communications and third $250 at Simple Indulgence.
The leaderboard will be printed on Wednesdays.
