Mare storms home

CANBERRA-trained mare To Dubawi Go caused the first upset yesterday.

The flying five-year-old stormed home to claim the $20,000 Lexus of Wodonga handicap (1400 metres).

With pre-race favourite Crystal Reef ($3.10) stuck on heavier ground close to the rail and next best bet Wingardium Leviosa ($4) failing to fire a shot, the stage was set for To Dubawi Go to charge home from the back of the field after sitting back early.

But it wasn’t as simple as that, according to jockey Jeff Penza.

“It was always going to be a tough race on this horse,” he said.

“It’s a very heavy track on the inside and she drew barrier one, first up, on this bog.

“Full credit to the trainer.

“She’s fit and she kept hitting the line.”

Premier Wagga trainer Trevor Sutherland rounded out the trifecta with stable pair Baa Ram Ewe and Rite Of Honour.
