LAVINGTON Public School principal Phil Cooper couldn’t remember a time when a student had won a medal at state level, let alone a gold.
But that changed last week.
Year 3 student Brooke King, 9, brought home a gold and three silver medals from the NSW PSSA State Swimming Championships in Sydney.
Brooke, who has a hearing impairment, won gold in the swimmer-with-disability 50-metre butterfly and silver in the 50-metre backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.
“Just to get any of our kids to state is phenomenal,” Mr Cooper said.
“In my time teaching I can’t remember any student who has won a (state) medal in sport whether athletics, cross country or swimming.”
Brooke was joined in Sydney by fellow student Max Arch who bettered his school record for the 50-metre butterfly.
Because she is not yet 10, Brooke must wait until next year to compete in national championships.
