VISUAL ARTS AND HISTORY: EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS
ALBURY ART GALLERY
ICONS FROM THE COLLECTION
UNTIL MAY 26
Here’s a chance to view the treasures of the Albury Council visual art collection! The collection started in 1974 when it took over as custodian of the Albury Art Prize collection. Since 1947, this annual prize, initiated by the Albury Art Society acquired works by acclaimed Australian artists such as Noel Counihan, Max Ragless, Weaver Hawkins, Franz Kempf, Kenneth Jack and Mary Beetson. When the historic Albury Town Hall was converted to an art gallery in 1982 a decision was made to collect Australian photography, primarily through the biennial National Photographic Prize. Since 1983, the gallery has acquired more than 91 works directly from this biennial competition and has expanded this collection with a further 350 works. In the 1990’s the eclectic collections of Howard Daniel came to the Albury Art Gallery. Today, with more than 1600 works in storage, this exhibition seeks to highlight some of the amazing artworks in the Albury Council collection. The exhibition will also include new works by leading, emerging and local artists who that have been commissioned to reinterpret works from the permanent collection with a contemporary perspective. Exhibition opening: 6pm Friday, April 12. RSVP (02) 6043 5800. Free event.
ALBURY ART GALLERY
JACQUES CALLOT’S ETCHINGS FROM THE DANIEL GIFT
UNTIL MAY 26
Jacques Callot was one of the great artists of 17th century Europe and the one most responsible for turning the technique of etching into an art. Born and raised in France, he travelled to Italy to be trained under the great masters of the time. Callot’s work soon surpassed even that of his masters and with the patronage of the powerful Medici family he became one of the most sought after and influential artists in Europe. Drawn from the Albury Council collection, this suite of etchings was collected by the foremost authority on Jacques Callot, Howard Daniel, who gifted the work to the Albury Art Gallery in the 1990s. Free event.
ALBURY LIBRARY MUSEUM
HOME/ON COUNTRY (2011-2013)
UNTIL MAY 12
An exhibition by Sydney based photographer Sarah Rhodes, depicting indigenous elders of the region wearing their language group’s possum skin cloak. The images celebrate the role of the possum skin cloak in strengthening cultural identity, connection to Country and the Elders’ pride in the revitalisation of this traditional cultural practice. The project was inspired by the two reproduction possum skin cloaks on display in the National Museum of Australia collection and the original cloaks in Museum Victoria. This show is accompanied by short films made by local indigenous young people. Opening: Saturday 30 March at 2pm. RSVP: (02) 6023 8333. Free event.
ON THEIR OWN: BRITAIN’S CHILD MIGRANTS
UNTIL APRIL 28
From the 1860s, more than 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries through child migration schemes. They were sent by charitable and religious organisations, with government support, in the belief that their lives would improve, and that they would provide much-needed labour and increase the population. Few were orphans; many came from families who were unable to care for them. The lives of these children changed dramatically and fortunes varied. Some succeeded in creating new futures. Others suffered lonely, brutal childhoods. All experienced disruption and separation from family and homeland. Child migration schemes received criticism from the outset, yet continued until the 1960s. Formal apologies were made by the Australian Government in 2009 and the British Government in 2010 but many former child migrants and their families are still coming to terms with their experience.

BENALLA ART GALLERY
LISA ROET: MONKEY GRIP
APRIL 20 TO 30
We know it; we sometimes choose to ignore it; we sometimes study it with a curiosity that is detailed, scientific, beautiful and hard to pull away from all at the same time. It is the close proximity and perplexing relationship between simian and human. Lisa Roet uses sculpture, etchings, drawings, photography and animation; a committed and multidisciplinary approach to her ongoing preoccupation with apes and monkeys. The artist is both researcher and advocate. More information at www.benallaartgallery.com
ANGRY PENGUINS AND THE ANTIPODEANS
UNTIL MAY 26
Cups of tea, painting in the countryside, the wool price is good, things are good “back home” in England, Robert Menzies’ Academy of Australian Art is building exaggeration, true, but the late 1930s to early 1940s provided the perfect environment for new ideas and different values. Enter “Angry Penguins”, named after the Adelaide magazine published by a young Max Harris, the artists whose core group of Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker and Joy Hester were occasional complemented in idea and image by members of the Contemporary Art Society. The time was ripe for change and the fuel came from Europe and the US - surrealism and modern poetry. It was going well until the Ern Malley hoax. Ironically, many of the same artists formed the “Antipodeans”, a group of artists reacting to the “threat” of abstract images from America and Europe. This show is a celebration of works within the Benalla Art Gallery’s own collection and of a time when every painting had a story to tell. The exhibition is in the Ledger Gallery.
AN AIRMAN’S DREAM: ARCH SIMPSON’S PIN-UPS
UNTIL MAY 5
Take a privileged glimpse, both very human and very intimate, into what helped one man survive World War II. Arch Simpson was part of the 78th Fighter Squadron. During his years of service, his maiden aunt sent him pin-up images of beautiful women. This is a wonderful story, laced with an irrepressible spirit for life and a celebration of beauty that even the darkest of circumstances could not suppress. Arch was a long-time volunteer and champion of the Benalla Art Gallery. The gallery in which this work is presented is named in his honour. The Benalla Art Gallery is fortunate to have access to the greater part of Arch’s pin-ups through his family, complimented by additional material from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This complete presentation is the story of one of Benalla’s heroes and firmly locates these pin-ups in their important and original context.
