Mr Leith and Paul Greene confessed to Albury Police yesterday they were the masterminds of the pre-election “dirty tricks” pamphlets relating to Cr Henk van de Ven.
Mr Jackson, the brother of Australia’s Olympic flag bearer and basketball superstar Lauren Jackson, contacted Mr Leith about his involvement in the bogus pamphlets and it was mutually agreed they would part company.
Mr Leith and Mr Greene admitted being the men captured on CCTV footage outside a David Street business last Tuesday night.
“Nobody on the ticket had prior knowledge of what happened,” Mr Jackson said.
“I hadn’t paid a lot of attention to what had been going on until today.
“It is definitely not the start I wanted in my first stint in politics.”
Mr Leith had displayed a “lapse of judgment”, but Mr Jackson was hoping to put the setback behind him when he announces his ticket today.
“They thought it would be a good prank and it has obviously got out of hand,” he said.
“The problem has been sorted and we are moving on.”
Mr Jackson briefly worked for Cr van de Ven at his ENZED business.
Last week he was contacted by his father Gary asking if he had been involved with the dodgy pamphlets before he and his wife Maree left to go to the Olympics.
Mr Jackson’s election ticket will remain endorsed by the Albury Citizens and Ratepayers Movement.
Mr Leith stood at the council elections four years ago on the movement’s ticket which had Cr Philomena Sawyer elected.
He said he took full responsibility for his actions, but he and Mr Greene had not been charged by police last night.
“It wasn’t intended to be insulting, just satirical political high jinx to get everyone interested,” Mr Leith said.
“I turned out to be the sober one who drove around with (Mr Greene).
“I take it on the chin, but it was the height of stupidity.”
Mr Leith said similar “pranks” had been in the pipeline for other councillors.
Mr Greene operates a website which focuses heavily on Albury Council.
Cr van de Ven said the matter was serious and he would discuss the confessions by Mr Leith and Mr Greene with police today.
“It is not a joking matter,” he said.
“The implication was because it was so far fetched I might have done it myself, but it is all untrue.
“I have to think about where this goes from here.
“It is not going to do Ross a hell of a lot of good in the election.”
