VISUAL ARTS AND HISTORY: EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS
ALBURY ART GALLERY
ICONS FROM THE COLLECTION
UNTIL JULY 5
Your chance to view the treasures of the Albury Council visual art collection. The collection began in 1974 when it took over as custodian of the Albury Art Prize collection. Since 1947, this annual prize, initiated by the Albury Art Society acquired works by acclaimed Australian artists such as Noel Counihan, Max Ragless, Weaver Hawkins, Franz Kempf, Kenneth Jack and Mary Beetson. When the historic Albury Town Hall was converted to an art gallery in 1982 a decision was made to collect Australian photography, primarily through the biennial National Photographic Prize. Since 1983, the gallery has acquired more than 91 works directly from this biennial competition and has expanded this collection with a further 350 works. In the 1990s the eclectic collections of Howard Daniel came to the Albury Art Gallery. Today, with more than 1600 works in storage, this exhibition seeks to highlight some of the amazing artworks in the Albury Council collection. The exhibition will also include new works by leading, emerging and local artists who that have been commissioned to reinterpret works from the permanent collection with a contemporary perspective. Exhibition opening: 6pm Friday, April 12. RSVP (02) 6043 5800. Free entry.

The opening offers an opportunity to celebrate International Museums Day. Free event. Phone: (02) 6023 8333.
SUPERCROC
UNTIL JULY 14
What was it like to be one of the largest crocodilians ever to roam the earth? Meet SuperCroc, an 11-metre, 9000 kilogram replica of Sarchosuchus imperator. SuperCroc’s jaws boasted more than 100 teeth, including a row of enlarged bone-crushing incisors. Its eye sockets were tilted upward, which helped it to conceal its huge body underwater while scanning the river’s edge for its next dinner. SuperCroc was donated to Australian Museum by its creator, National Geographic Channel. Its genuine ancestor roamed the world 110 million years ago, in what is now the windswept Ténéré Desert, Central Niger, home of the richest dinosaur beds in Africa. When the fossilised jaws were found, palaeontologists knew it was no dinosaur. In fact, it was a dinosaur eater! The snout and teeth were designed for grabbing prey— fish, turtles and dinosaurs that strayed too close. This enormous reptile made Africa’s ancient riverbanks a very dangerous place. Programs: A Conversation with Mark Richmond, herpetologist and owner of Crocodile Encounters, 5pm, Thursday, July 4, in the SuperCroc’ exhibition as he shares his knowledge about crocodiles and other reptiles. Free event for all ages. Bookings: Phone (02) 6023 8333.
