Traffic authorities had advised motorists to avoid Parramatta Road in the inner-west region after the fire broke out in a Volkswagen Kombi van.
Both city- and west-bound cars were diverted into nearby suburban streets for a while after the incident, which happened at about 2.45pm. By 4pm, most of the normal flow had resumed in both directions.
"It went as well as it could," a spokesman for the Transport Management Centre said. "If it had happened at 7am on Monday, it would have caused hell."
The centre said traffic was now moving in both directions along Parramatta Road and that the early congestion had been resolved.
North-bound traffic on the Harbour Bridge, meanwhile, may be slowed by maintenance work on the railway track, taking out one of the four lanes.
