The Winter Solstice for Survivors of Suicide evening kicks off at 5pm at Albury’s QEII Square with food available before speakers get started at 6pm.
They will include Dr Patrick McGorry, who lent his voice to The Border Mail’s Ending the Suicide Silence campaign in August last year, and Sue Murray from Suicide Prevention Australia.
Jennifer Watterson will speak about losing her elder brother to suicide, while special entertainment will be provided by the Albury High School’s choir and drama group, Emma Percy and Paul Dyason.
Following on from the campaign launch, tonight’s event, organised by a small but determined committee, is about providing support to those left behind after a suicide, promoting healing and breaking down the stigma.
Too often the grief of those who lose a loved one to suicide is borne in silence and without acknowledgment.
This community has taken enormous steps towards breaking the suicide silence but we must guard against complacency in offering ongoing support.
