THERE are Socceroos, star players and record holders in Twin City’s team of the past 40 years.
The Wanderers unveiled a team of the best senior men and a dream team of former juniors who moved on to greater things at their anniversary celebrations recently.
It is a rich list of talent headed by Socceroos squad members Archie Thompson and Josh Kennedy.
But there are others who have gone on to national soccer clubs, the Australian Institute of Sport and higher honours in Australia and abroad.
Twin City’s Harry Wilhelm, himself part of the best in 40 years seniors, said the selection was done by 10 people, including two coaches from outside the club.
“It was an interesting exercise,” he said.
“Obviously Kennedy and Thompson were always going to be part of it but Andy Harrod who came to the club in 1990s from the Army was the only player to get all 10 selectors votes in the senior team — he was an outstanding player.”
Wilhelm said the strength of the club over its history had been junior development.
“We have in the past prided ourselves on getting the basics right, making sure the juniors learn the fundamentals of the game, having the right coaches in place,” he said.
“As young boys Archie and Josh stood out, they always had a ball at their feet, flicking it up in the air, even to the annoyance of their coaches.
“I think Zac Walker is another who could one day play for Australia but he needs the right door to open for him.”
