Leasing an office might be the answer but it is not always affordable.

Instead of cramping up the local coffee shop with the laptop, there is space in Perth which is successfully filling the gap.

On any given day, the average office is rarely at full capacity with about 60 to 70 per cent of desks may be occupied.

Brodie McCulloch from Spacecubed, a co-working facility in Perth's CBD, says co-working is a smart use of space and a great way to reduce carbon emissions.

The 550 square metres of office space that makes up Spacecubed currently offers space for about 270 people.

Mr McCulloch acts as onsite community manager who answers any questions anyone has about the facility.

He admitted like any other office, the main issue that ever came up was dishes not being done.

Mr McCulloch said the place was started with no rules and he had not had to make any.

With urban sprawl meaning people are living further away from their workplaces, Mr McCulloch said co-working spaces would provide a way for people to work closer to home.

Bigger companies may be based in outer suburbs but use the facility for its workers to hold meetings for one day of the week.

Mr McCulloch said working in an office with people from different companies and expertise provided a great potential for networking.

There are also plenty of distractions at home, such as television or children.

Mr McCulloch said one local business with about 50 staff used Spacecubed for any meetings and when employees had to work together and has no office of its own.

In an extra benefit for those who chose this way of working, Mr McCulloch said people tended to self organise better when they were "paying for their time."

"People don't value it if they are not paying for it so they are more focused in delivering something."

He is hoping to expand Spacecubed within the CBD and the broader metro area by the end of the year.

There are at least two other similar co-working hubs operated by other companies throughout Perth at this stage.

One of those is Nest in Victoria Park.

Vaelei Walkden-Brown is an interior designer who recently started her business, Haptic Design.

She has been using the space at Nest each Thursday for the past four months.

Ms Walkden-Brown said she had met people such as accountants, web designers and artists that had been able to give her advice and feedback on different aspects of her business.

She said there were quite a few people working on business start-ups basing themselves out of Nest.

Ms Walkden-Brown said the work place provided an affordable and supportive environment for people in the early stages of a new business and was also handy as it offered workshops that helped her with management of her business.

Julia Koh is in the process of creating a food outlet to be called JBento.

For the past few months she has put her three-year-old child in day care for 10 days per month when she goes into Nest.

"Working from home, you know how it is when you have kids at home, you can't concentrate, so I find this really helps," she said.

At home she faces too many distractions, even when by herself.

Ms Koh said she had also been able to speak to different people from different industries who were able to suggest ideas and give a different perspective to what she is working on.

"It gives you the sense of what's possible."

The Victoria Park location is just a five to 10 minute drive from her home, making it convenient.

She said there was a positive spirit within the office

Ms Koh said when she launches her business in July she will probably still return to Nest to do any paperwork for the business.

Curtin University cultural studies expert Jon Stratton believed co-working would become more of a mainstream option in the future.

"With more computer based work more people are increasingly flexible in terms of working from home but often people don't like working from home, co-working works better for them," he said.

"It works very well for computer based workers and small start-ups, people working individually, where people need an office."
