Mr Luvara said he had followed Bob Katter’s career for five years.
He was given the opportunity to represent the party in Indi after learning there was already a Katter candidate in the Murray electorate.
He said fruit-canning was in crisis because the high dollar had smashed export markets.
Mr Luvara said he had regularly voiced his concerns about the issues hurting his industry and thought he could do more if he became involved in politics.
He criticised the lack of support for the nation’s manufacturing companies which, he said, would lead more overseas products being imported.
He hoped the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, would not call the election for August 31 because he wanted to visit Wangaratta and Wodonga within the next month to raise awareness about the Katter Party.
“We want time to get ourselves out there and let people know that the Katter Party is out there to represent you,” he said.
“If any issue is hurting an area we want to see if it’s something we can help with.”
Mr Luvara said he liked the fact party founder Bob Katter supported collective bargaining.
“He is a stand-up Australian and pushes for the Aussie battler,” he said.
“Bob is the middle ground between Labor and Liberal.”
Mr Luvara wanted to keep issues in the spotlight and thought his main focus should be helping local industries in crisis.
