COROWA Council is strongly opposed to being moved out of the Albury electorate.
Mayor Fred Longmire said his residents had nothing to gain from being moved into an electorate that was the same size as the federal Farrer electorate.
“It is where the shire’s community of interest lies along with strong social, economic and sporting interests,” Cr Longmire said.
“It is the shire’s major regional centre and direct neighbour.
“To redistribute any part of the shire to another electorate to balance electoral numbers is totally inappropriate.”
Member for Albury Greg Aplin said Corowa shire was more suited in his electorate.
“Corowa is the second largest population centre in the electoral district and starts a few kilometres on the outskirts of Albury,” he said.
“Soon after Splitters Creek and a little bit of Greater Hume shire, you actually enter Corowa shire well before you get to Howlong.
“People who live in these areas all have a lot in common.
“Unfortunately populations don’t increase in areas like Murray-Darling so therefore they expand in size.”
