A WAGGA man was killed in a three-vehicle accident near Culcairn yesterday.
Police have identified the man as Christopher Smith, 60.
The crash occurred about 7.45am on the Holbrook-Culcairn Road, three kilometres east of Culcairn.
The man’s red Ford Mondeo was hit by a Ford Territory that moments earlier had been involved in a crash with a livestock truck.
Police said it appeared the driver of the Territory had crossed onto the wrong side of the road after the crash with the truck and hit the Mondeo head-on.
The Territory driver was treated at Albury Base Hospital for a cut to the head while the truck driver was uninjured.
Both took mandatory blood and urine tests.
The Holbrook-Culcairn Road between Culcairn and Morven was closed most of yesterday, as police worked on their investigation.
Investigators from Albury and a Sydney forensic team surveyed the scene.
Albury police Insp Lynelle Rodwell said the crash was “tragic”.
“It is a tragic circumstance for the family who have lost a loved one,” she said.
“It is also a difficult time for those who saw the accident occur.
“It’s a timely reminder to be vigilant on our roads.
“Take precautions in hazardous driving conditions and always obey the road rules.”
The condition of the Culcairn-Holbrook Road was criticised by the Greater Hume Shire Council late last year, with general manager Steve Pinnuck saying the road had been left in a “dreadful” state by heavy construction equipment working on the Holbrook bypass.
The NSW government last year allocated $356,000 to widen the road shoulders near Morven.
