Christopher Smith, 60, was the sole occupant of a red Ford Mondeo which collided with a Ford Territory on the Holbrook-Culcairn Road about 7.45am.
Mr Smith died at the scene and his family have requested privacy.
Police said the Territory had been involved in a separate collision with a livestock truck moments earlier and appeared to have crossed onto the wrong side of the road about three kilometres east of the town.
Albury crime scene investigators initially surveyed the scene before a forensic team from Sydney arrived in the afternoon.
According to Roads and Maritime Services the Holbrook-Culcairn Road was closed between Culcairn and Morven until about 8pm.
The driver of the Territory has been released from hospital.
The truck driver was uninjured.
Investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Albury police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
