A FEW more centimetres and an elderly Melbourne woman could have been seriously injured in a crash at Benalla this afternoon.
Benalla police Sgt Brad McMennemin said the woman and her husband, both in their 80s, were travelling from Bentleigh to Yarrawonga to visit family.
About 1.30pm on Sydney Road, about a kilometre from the Hume Freeway interchange, the car drifted onto the soft edges of the road.
Sgt McMennemin said the husband, who was driving, over-corrected, causing the back passenger side of the Ford sedan to slam into a tree.
"If it had've been a foot further up, the front passenger would've copped the full brunt of the crash," he said.
The couple sustained minor injuries and were taken to Wangaratta Base Hospital for observation.
