A MAN who allegedly assaulted former Albury councillor and Labor Party candidate Nico Mathews has pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Dean James Azzi, 42, of Mount Street, did not appear in Albury Local Court yesterday on a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was represented by solicitor Paul Robb who indicated a plea of not guilty.
Magistrate Tony Murray ordered the preparation of a police brief of evidence by September 17.
The case returns to court on September 23 when a hearing date will be allocated.
The charge relates to Azzi allegedly assaulting Mr Mathews between 7.30pm and 7.40pm on Anzac Day.
It is understood the assault took place at an Albury hotel and Mr Mathews allegedly suffered a facial injury.
