Albury-Wodonga is one of Australia’s largest regional areas without a federally funded centre for youth mental illness.
We believe we need to change that. And we need to act together.
Border politicians and former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett have joined the fight, throwing their weight behind the establishment of a headspace centre here.
headspace centres are for people aged 12 to 25 and in the past five years have helped almost 70,000 people deal with depression, anxiety and stress.
All are leading causes of youth suicide — the biggest killer of young people, responsible for one in four deaths.
There are 40 centres across Australia, but the nearest to the Border at Bendigo and Wagga.
Another 15 will be rolled out next year, the nearest of those at Shepparton.
Mr Kennett, who has led national mental health initiative beyondblue since 2000, says that is too far away.
WE BELIEVE IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ONE OF THESE CENTRES IS BASED IN ALBURY-WODONGA.
To show your support, grab a Border Mail newspaper this week and cut out the printed butterfly. Write your name, age and a message (if you have one) about why the Border region needs a headspace.
Then post it to us, or simply drop it into a Border Mail office.
We'll stick every butterfly in the window of our Dean Street office in Albury. It will send a clear message to the Federal Government.
