JERILDERIE super boot Aaron Purcell became the first player in Australia to kick 200 goals this season when he smashed through the barrier with 23 majors against Deniliquin Rovers at Jerilderie on Saturday.
Purcell took his season tally to 211 from 18 home and away matches with a goalkicking master class that has taken him to within four of breaking Waaia legend Danny Irwin’s Picola and District Football League record set in 1992.
The former Lavington premiership star was typically low-key about his performance.
“It was good to kick a few. The boys looked after me,” Purcell said.
Jerilderie finished on top of the ladder which means Purcell could have only two matches to chase down Deniliquin full-forward Trevor Sutton’s all-time record of 249 goals.
Purcell, 35, had kicked 11 goals by half-time against the third-placed Deni Rovers and brought up his double century early in the third term.
“The kids ran out and were fairly happy about it,” Jerilderie president Stuart Watson said yesterday.
Although Purcell rated Saturday’s game as his best individual showing of the season, it wasn’t his most prolific after he booted 25 goals against Yarroweyah on May 18.
He made his senior debut at Jerilderie as a 15 year old and recently played his 250th match.
