The Albury-Wodonga Corporation board has confirmed Mr Veneris, 46, as its new chief executive officer and he will leave the council in late April.
Greater Hume Mayor John Ross said yesterday the councillors had held a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss Mr Veneris’s resignation.
“Peter has done a wonderful job for Greater Hume and will leave a gaping hole,” Cr Ross said.
“But it’s a hole that will be filled.
“Because the next three months are our busiest period while we decide next year’s budget and rates, we decided to appoint Steve Pinnuck in an acting role for six months.
“In that period we will decide how to advertise for a new general manager and whether to appoint an external consultant for the process.”
Greater Hume has a $23 million budget and will decide soon whether to raise its rates by a maximum 3.6 per cent.
Mr Pinnuck is a former Culcairn council general manager who joined Greater Hume at its inception.
He has been director of corporate service for 18 months and has held the community and economic development portfolios for slightly longer.
Mr Veneris said yesterday he was looking forward to work with the corporation board and staff in what he saw as a fresh opportunity after a long career in local government.
“I worked for Hume council for 22 years and met a lot of wonderful men and women there,” he said.
“Working for the new Greater Hume council was a challenging period and I’ve a lot of admiration for the staff who have established the new structures.”
Mr Veneris’s main job at the corporation will be to oversee the management and the disposal for development of the remaining 6300ha land bank in NSW and Victoria.
