A BORDER firebug may have burnt down a toilet in the middle of the snow, police said.
Wangaratta Detective Sen-Constable Paul Campbell said an environmentally friendly drop toilet costing thousands of dollars at the Lake Cobbler camping ground, near Whitfield, was destroyed on the night of Saturday, July 27.
He said petrol was used to spark the fire.
“Accelerant was used to ignite the public toilets which has caused several thousands of dollars worth of damage,” he said.
“It will have to be re-built.”
Sen-Constable Campbell said there were a number of people camping there that night.
He said police suspected the male driver of a blue 100 series Landcruiser with NSW number plates could be responsible.
“Police believe the offender is from the Albury-Wodonga area,” he said.
He labelled it a prank that got out of control.
“It’s a prank that got out of control and has resulted in nasty, nasty damage,” he said.
“It’s a public convenience, something there for people that are visiting the High Country. It’s not fair.”
He asked anyone who knew the culprits or had any information to come forward by phoning Wangaratta detectives on (03) 5723 0888 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
