WANGARATTA Rovers have moved to solve their key forward woes by signing former Frankston goalkicker Aaron Murray.
Murray, who spent four years with the Dolphins in the VFL, will watch the Hawks’ elimination final against North Albury at Myrtleford on Sunday.
He is a good friend of Sam Carpenter and will move to Wangaratta next week.
Murray was sidelined this year following a knee reconstruction and last played for Somerville in the Nepean league in 2012 when he captained that side.
Hawks football operations manager Barry Sullivan said yesterday the club hoped to secure Murray long term in a bid to fill the void left by former AFL star Barry Hall when he left the club after last year’s heartbreaking finals campaign.
“We’ve been looking to replace Barry for about 12 months now, I suppose,” Sullivan said.
“Key forwards are very hard to come by.
“It’s very exciting to have Aaron on board and the thing that’s a real plus is that he’s always been in leadership roles.
“Hopefully he complements our existing forward line well, which we think he will.”
