THE Alpine Way is closed in both directions 22 kilometres south of Khancoban due to a rock fall early yesterday.
The road was already operating under alternating traffic conditions after a rock fall last month.
Yesterday’s fall was at the same site that required emergency work last month.
Roads and Maritime inspected the road yesterday and called in specialist equipment.
Clean-up work will start this morning if the weather allows.
A detour using the Snowy Mountains Highway via Tumut, Tumbarumba to Khancoban ads about 3½ hours to the journey so motorists have been advised to avoid non-essential travel.
The Alpine Way, between Jindabyne and Thredbo Village, is still open and there is access to Khancoban town from Tumbarumba and Corryong.
Another route between Khancoban and Thredbo is via Elliott Way from Tooma and Mount Selwyn.
Motorists were urged to drive cautiously obey signs and traffic controllers and allow extra time.
