AN automated phone message attacking member for Indi Sophie Mirabella has triggered outrage from the Liberal incumbent and her main rival, independent candidate Cathy McGowan.
The message was sent to hundreds of homes across the North East electorate last night, advising voters to "send Sophie Mirabella a message" and vote for a "local" candidate.
The Australian Labor Party this morning confirmed it was responsible for the call that features former independent Tony Windsor's opinion that Mrs Mirabella warranted his parliamentary "nasty prize".
The recording from ABC-TV's Insiders program quoted Mr Windsor saying the citizens of Indi "could do much better" than Mrs Mirabella.
Mrs Mirabella said this morning she was disgusted but not surprised by the tactic, which she linked to a joint "left-wing" Labor-McGowan campaign against her.
Ms McGowan strenuously denied any involvement in the call and deplored it as a dirty trick the people of Indi would not wish to witness as part of the election campaign.
Labor candidate for Indi Robyn Walsh said she was unaware of the automated call before it was transmitted across the electorate.
