IT is one of the most recognisable Aussie icons, the pie topped with tomato sauce.
And now a bakery in the region has proved its pastries are worth going the distance for after being awarded two gold medals, two silver and one bronze at the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
But it was not the classic meat pie that took home the gold for the Jindera Bakery.
The brekkie pie and vege stack pie were the ones that came out on top with Thai chicken and lamb mint rosemary pies following with silver medals and the traditional flavoured pie collecting the bronze.
Owner Harley Lloyd said the bakery was still in the running to win the best pie in the country.
Mr Lloyd broke into a smile and said he would be “absolutely stoked” if he won the title of the best pie.
Mr Lloyd and his wife Rachel have owned the bakery for eight years and said they were surprised by how quickly the business grew.
“It has taken off better than expected but we are fussy about our products,” he said.
Customers Tracey McLauchlan and Steven Piper agreed the pies were some of the tastiest they ever had.
“It’s like getting a whole meal in one pie because they are just full of flavour,” Ms McLauchlan said.
Milawa Pies also took home a gold, three silver and two bronze medals along with Yackandandah-based Gum Tree Pies who won a gold, four silver and six bronze medals.
