THURGOONA captured its first A-grade premiership since 2000 when it stormed home to edge out Yackandandah 40-36 at Sandy Creek on Saturday.
After trailing by three goals at the final change, the Bulldogs found another gear with goal defence Renae Pickering leading the way with a best on court performance.
Pickering made several telling intercepts and rebounds to allow the team to hit the lead midway through the term and, with Lauren Coelli shooting well, the minor premier held on for a thrilling win.
Assistant-coach Sharla Sutcliffe said the match could have gone either way.
“It was really even all day and we were never really in front until halfway through the last quarter,” Sutcliffe said.
“Everyone came together when it counted.”
Thurgoona’s B-grade went back-to-back by beating Yackandandah 36-15 while the Bulldogs took out the 18 and under with a 31-28 win over Rutherglen.
