ALEX Marklew underlined his bright future in football by taking out the SS & A Rising Star award last night.
The Wangaratta Rovers prodigy, who burst onto the scene late in the season, claimed the Richard Hamilton Medal as the league’s best young player.
Marklew, 17, said he was shocked to win after playing only six senior home and away and two finals matches.
“I didn’t expect it after playing thirds at the start of the year,” Marklew said.
“There were some good players out there.”
The livewire forward, son of former Rover Rick, made a memorable debut at Corowa in round 12 and went on to kick 19 goals to prove one of the finds of the season.
“Dad coached me in the junior league and has helped me right along the way,” he said.
Marklew is likely to play for the Murray Bushrangers next year.
Wangaratta’s Zack Leitch, Wodonga Raider Ben Murphy and North Albury pair Alex Freeman and Jordan Harrington were also nominated.
North Albury netballer Eloise Maddox took out the Diamond Rising Star award.
Chloe Senior, Jordan Farrugia, Caitlyn Cose and Abbey Jones also won nominations throughout the year.
