HOCKEY’S answer to Twenty20 cricket is back and the winner will be a charity.
The second season of Hockey 8s will be launched tonight at The Newmarket Hotel — 10 teams are to compete over three Friday nights from October 18.
The competition, with hybrid rules and shortened games, last year raised $18,000, split between the Hilltop patient carer centre and the hockey schools’ program.
Men’s team captains are Andrew Monte, Ian Beath, Ben Martin, Matt Bardy, Jeremy Maggs and Peter Barber, with women’s captains Nan Latta, Amy Allen, Danni McLeish and Kate Bardy.
They selected their teams last week.
Organiser Ross Maggs said there should be plenty of goals scored with the revamped penalty corner rule allowing only three defenders instead of five.
“The men play a round robin in the first two weeks and the women play each other twice at the hockey centre,” he said.
