THURGOONA Tigers claimed bragging rights against club mates Cats in Saturday’s season decider of section 1 men at Thurgoona Tennis Centre.
Dave Elliott was unbeaten for the afternoon, setting the tone early for Tigers by grabbing a hard-fought tie-break over Dane Motley in the opening singles.
Graham Wurtz and Michael McMahon also contributed to the 4 sets to 2 win with fine doubles play, while Rodney Wurtz and Scott Black each won a singles rubber.
In section 2, Thurgoona Sharks claimed the first-set tie-break but that was as good as it got for them, with Albury Gold stepping up and running away comfortable winners.
Cameron Scholz, Paul Grover, Ian Llewelyn and Wayne Cheshire all combined brilliantly, while Graeme McNichol and Terry McLean were good early for Sharks.
With honours even after four sets played, Thurgoona Jade finished the stronger, victorious in the final two stanzas and the match against East Albury in the ladies section 2 finale.
Jo Simpfendorfer was solid all day in her team’s triumph, supported by Jackie Rooke, Sally Marceau and Trish Baldwin.
Merryl Lindner was a two-set winner for East.
Forrest Hill Blues were never seriously threatened in their comprehensive victory over St Patricks-Diggerville White in section 3 men.
The first two sets were close but from there, Sean Pillay, Sabastain Blac, and John and Liam O’Neill stamped their authority to win six sets to love.
The womens’ decider was a much closer affair, with Lavington Red ahead when it counted against Wodonga Aces.
Lavington’s Alison Eaton’s three-set haul was the standout performance for the afternoon, with good support from Sarah Maxted, Lynne Nelson and Kerrie Smith.
In section 4 men, SPD Gold easily accounted for club mates, Red.
Patrick Parnell, Ethan Wenzke and Rory Parnell played well throughout, while Matt Lyons claimed a set for Red.
Lavington, with the advantage of claiming three tight sets, accounted for SPD in the women’s final.
Jess Kerslake, Enid Antone, Janice Elsey and Jenny Grey all contributed to the victory.
Summer pennant will commence on October 12.
