WODONGA bowler Ashley Bates has been selected in the Victorian over 60 team to play in an inter-state series at Geelong next month.
Bates was picked to skip one of the three rinks after recent trials held at Altona.
He is a state selector and did not play last year because of a possible conflict.
But state administrators made a ruling earlier this year that selectors can play provided their form is appropriate.
The other state selectors picked the three skips following the trials and then invited Bates to participate in the selection of the other positions.
Country players dominate the team with eight included and four from the city.
Every state and territory will be represented by men and women’s teams at the Belmont club from October 21 to 25.
Bates is the only representative from the Ovens and Murray region included in the team.
The team is Brian Richards (Glenroy), Len Callus (Altona), Barry Anset (Golden Square), Ian Ross (Bendigo) s; Graeme Spencer (Brighton), Dennis Arthur (Queenscliff), Craig Elliott (Geelong West), Ashley Bates (Wodonga) s; Torie Babitsch (Bendigo), Terry Gilmore (Cohuna), Mario Cipolla (Bundoora RSL) and Frank Tonn (Cohuna) s.
- URANA is the smallest club in the Albury and District Bowling Association.
But each year it makes a significant contribution to worthy causes through money raised from a charity tournament.
The club has donated more than $5000 to Ronald McDonald House, the Cancer Council Foundation, McGrath Foundation and Beyond Blue.
This year the club is running an event to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Organiser Mick Dunnett said the bowls day will be held on October 27.
“We are looking for single entries only as the teams and format will be determined on the day,” he said.
“There will be two games of eight ends followed by afternoon tea with the cost being $10 per person.
“It is open to bowlers and non-bowlers as this is a charity event.”
Dunnett said before the bowls there will be an ambassador from the foundation giving a brief question and answer talk.
There is a major fund-raiser with about 20 prizes.
Anyone wanting to play or assist can contact Dunnett on 0447809296 or email@example.com.
