A MAGISTRATE has described two women who courageously stepped in to stop an armed hold-up at a Wagga bottle shop on Tuesday night as “extraordinary”.
Grant Andrew Churchin, 21, was charged in Wagga Local Court yesterday with assault with intent to rob and two counts of assaulting police.
Magistrate Michael Antrum refused him bail, saying a strong prosecution case and the short period between his release in June and the alleged offence was a concern.
Police told the court Churchin approached the Kooringal Hotel bottle shop drive-through about 6pm on Tuesday wearing a beanie with eye holes cut in it.
He made demands while stabbing at a cardboard box with a knife before two women intervened.
Mr Antrum said the acts were “extraordinary” and amount to, as a police prosecutor described, acts of courage.
Churchin, who ran off after the intervention, was arrested in Chifley Crescent that night.
