CLASSY Gundagai captain-coach James Smart last night scored a runaway victory in the Eric Weissel Medal count at Wagga’s Commercial Club.
Smart stormed clear in the final rounds to the season to poll 26 votes, eight ahead of Young captain-coach Luke Branighan.
Albury’s Willie Heta and Kangaroos star Glen Dumbrell tied for third on 16 votes.
Heta made a blistering start to the count but was unable to hold off Smart and Branighan particularly after missing round 16 due to his brother’s wedding and Thunder having the bye in the final home and away round.
In a remarkable twist, Smart’s brother, Scott, took out the reserve grade medal.
James will lead Gundagai into battle against Albury in tomorrow’s grand final, while Scott will coach the Tigers’ reserve grade side in the decider against Brothers.
Kangaroos’ Stephanie Muir edged out Brothers’ Gabby Suckling by one vote to win the leaguetag, while Zeik Foster finished two clear of Albury’s Lachie Hampton to take out the best and fairest medal in Weissel Cup.
