WODONGA trainer David O’Prey is sweating on a late scratching to enable his in-form galloper Providential to force his way into the final field for the $35,000 0-72 Hcp (1533 metres) at Moonee Valley tomorrow night.
Providential is first emergency in the final field comprising of 10 runners and four emergencies.
The six-year-old gelding has won his past two starts at Wodonga and Wangaratta, prompting O’Prey to target city success.
Providential has had one previous city start at Sandown as a three-year-old where he finished unplaced on a heavy track at Sandown.
While O’Prey is eager to head to Moonee Valley he has also nominated Providential for a mile race at Echuca on Monday.
“Fingers crossed he gains a start, especially after we drew barrier one,” O’Prey said.
“He worked terrific on Tuesday morning.
“We are a bit unlucky in that the fields at Moonee Valley have been reduced to only 10 runners with the rail being out seven metres.
“But if he misses out at the Valley will we head to Echuca on Monday but he will have to carry 61½ kilograms which is probably not ideal.”
O’Prey is plotting a path targeting the $80,000 Wodonga Gold Cup (1590 metres) on December 1.
He is a previous winner of his home-town feature with Elizabethan.
Apprentice jockey Jye McNeil is booked to ride Providential at Moonee Valley.
He has also been aboard the gelding on both wins this preparation.
