A TEENAGER had his learner’s permit for just four days before his need to see family in NSW was so urgent he sped at 154km/h near Glenrowan yesterday morning.
Wangaratta police Sgt Tim Hart said police spotted the 1993 Honda Civic headed north and travelling at more than 40km/h over the speed limit at 4.30am.
“I know I’ve been doing this for 32 years and I shouldn’t be, but I’m still shocked at the stupidity of people,” Sgt Hart said.
He said the driver of the car and sole occupant of the Honda, a man, 19, from Laverton, had only got his learner’s permit four days before.
Sgt Hart said the driver told police he urgently needed to see family at Mirrabook, near Newcastle.
“He came across to police as totally ambivalent to the risks he was putting himself and other road users in,” he said.
“That sort of speed and at that time of day with the high volume of heavy transport vehicles — we’ve potentially saved his life.”
Sgt Hart said the car was immediately impounded.
He was dropped off at the Wangaratta train station.
The teenager will face a charge of speed dangerous at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
