This exhibition tells the story of Albury from first contact with the Wiradjuri, traditional owners of the land to the City we share today. The exhibition includes the story of the Bonegilla Migrant Reception & Training Centre and other key influences on the region. On the second Sunday of the month enjoy a free guided tour of ‘The Crossing Place’ exhibition provided by the museum’s curator or experience an audio tour of the ‘Crossing Place, a story of Albury’ exhibition. Listen to first hand memories of significant events in Albury’s history and you’ll feel as if you were there! Guided Tour: 2pm Sunday, October 13. FIRST FLIGHT

In 1911, mechanics Azor Robbins and Alexander Porter embarked on an ambitious plan to build their own monoplane. Spurred on by the world’s new fascination for flight, the young mechanics set up shop in Albury and began work. In March 1913 the home-built monoplane was fitted with the Robbins and Porter-designed and constructed flat-four engine and underwent taxi trials. On July 27, 1913 it was taken to Bungowannah Park Estate and, in front of six witnesses, it flew six metres off the ground. The trial was repeated a few days later but after a mechanical malfunction the plane never flew again. A life-size replica of the Robbins and Porter monoplane has been hung from the Albury Library Museum ceiling.

Wiradjuri Talkback is a celebration of the perspectives and traditional knowledge of the Albury-Wodonga region’s Aboriginal people, showcasing a powerful and thought-provoking blend of traditional and contemporary elements illustrating the rich cultural traditions of Wiradjuri country. Alongside traditional Riverina bark paintings and tools are sketches by 19th century Aboriginal artist Tommy McRae, a local identity famed for his depictions of traditional Aboriginal life.

The Albury Wodonga Artists Society was formed in 1987 by a small band of enthusiastic Border and district painters. Three or four times a year, workshops are held covering painting in oil, pastels and watercolour. Works from these workshop as well as works completed outside of these designated times will be on display in this exhibition. With works covering various mediums, and no limitations on size, the exhibition should have something to interest everyone. The works are also available for sale. The Army Museum Bandiana is among Australia’s best army museums where 190 army vehicles, dozens of field guns, weapons, uniforms, medals and items dating back as far as the 18th century are displayed in about 5000 square metres of display space. Flora and Fauna is a group exhibition by three practicing visual artists who work in a variety of media ranging from printmaking to textile based work and metal/wood mixed media. This exhibition will portray aspects and personal impressions relating to the animal and plant life specific to North East Victoria, where Rose Wedler, Fleur Rendell and Sally Huguenin live. The artists are not collaborating on works, but will develop three distinctly different bodies of work. Even though they work in very different media, the art works that have been produced complement each other and will present an intriguing and diverse combination of each artist’s individual interpretation on the theme. LAST MAN STANDING: TREVOR ‘TURBO’ BROWN

Last Man Standing’ is an exhibition by one of Australia’s most important contemporary artists, Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown. Turbo creates his works based on his connection to the Australian landscape and the flora and fauna that make it their home. The concept for ‘Last Man Standing’ came from Turbo’s fear for the Australian animals that are on the brink of extinction and the idea that one day they may no longer share our great landscape. His work is influenced both by the last 8 years living in Melbourne and his memory of the bush and travelling in Victoria.
Known for his bright paintings, the exhibition features 12 large-scale works of the Australian landscape and the precious animals that live within it.
Turbo is a Latje Latje man from Mildura who was born in 1967. He holds a Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) from RMIT Melbourne. His work is widely acclaimed and has been acquired by some of Australia’s largest galleries. He has also had many highly successfully exhibitions.
SAM STAUGHTON

Sam Staughton was born into the life of farming but was naturally inclined towards the visual arts. ‘Wolbunya’, the family property was his working life although he managed a full course of study at the National Gallery of Victoria and a tour of England and Europe before he returned to his family’s farming commitments. Marriage, children and continual farming did not stop his painting passion. Finally the farm was sold and Sam and his wife Marian and children moved to Melbourne. Sam was painting full time. In the years that followed Sam held ten solo exhibitions, almost one a year, establishing himself as a highly committed and well liked artist amongst his peers and industry notables. The exhibition is in the Bennett Gallery.

One of the oldest inspirations, the female form, is bought to focus in Naked Ladies. This exhibition, in the Ledger Gallery, celebrates the female form thorough a collection of work by artists including David Laity, Sidney Nolan, Ivan Durrant, Arthur Boyd and Norman Lindsay. Works are from the gallery’s permanent collection and on loan from artists and private collectors.

The Corowa Collection showcases the prize winners in all sections of the annual Federation Art Show that have been acquired by the Federation Art Show Committee and held in trust by Corowa Shire Council for the past thirteen years. This is the first time that these art works have been displayed together as a collection and for many of these works it is the first time they have been on public display.
