A BONEGILLA woman was left with burns to her hands after handling a homemade explosive device left in her letterbox.
Police said the woman found the plastic bottle filled with chemicals in the letterbox of her Mahers Road home about 4.15pm yesterday.
It exploded in her hands as she picked it up, leaving her with minor burns.
Detective Leading Sen-Const Brendan Roche called for anyone with any information that could help police investigations to come forward.
"She did not sustain any serious injuries but was clearly quite shaken," he said.
"Obviously the consequences of this could have been much worse."
Sen-Const Roche said at this stage it did not appear the woman had been deliberately targeted, and the incident was likely a "one-off".
Anyone with information that could assist, or noticed anything suspicious in the area, should contact Wodonga police on (02) 6024 2600, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
