ALBURY has trumped a host of rival Ovens and Murray clubs in the race to secure talented Holbrook youngster Jim Grills.
And the Tigers might not be finished there, with SANFL star Brayden O’Hara also firmly on their recruiting radar.
Grills, 19, signed with the league heavyweight yesterday after attracting the attention of several clubs following a dominant finals series for the Brookers in the Hume league.
The dangerous small forward said he had jumped at the opportunity to join one of country football’s strongest clubs.
“I had a few offers but it’s exciting to be joining a powerhouse like Albury,” Grills said.
“I’ve always aspired to play at the highest level that I
possibly can.
“Obviously breaking into a star-studded line-up such as Albury is going to be a big challenge for me.
“I’m just looking forward to having a huge pre-season and giving myself every opportunity of playing seniors.
“I can’t wait.”
Grills, who has previously played for the Murray Bushrangers and NSW-ACT Rams, was instrumental in Holbrook’s charge into this year’s Hume league grand final against Brock-Burrum.
The livewire booted 53 goals in 19 games, making a name for himself at the pointy end of the season.
Grills kicked 16 goals in four finals appearances, including four in the decider to be one of the Brookers best in their loss to Brock-Burrum by 30-points.
He is also a talented polocrosse player and represented the national under-21 polocrosse team at Warwick, Queensland in August.
O’Hara, meanwhile, looks every chance of joining the Tigers after attending their best and fairest count at the weekend.
The midfield star played in a hat-trick of SANFL flags at Central District in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
O’Hara is considered one of the best players in South Australia’s premier competition and finished seventh in this year’s Magarey Medal.
