A SPLIT-second distraction yesterday caused a crash in which a car almost lost a wheel.
The driver of a Toyota Aurion was heading south on High Street, Wodonga, just after 2pm when he struck trouble.
Wodonga Sen-Constable Mark Paynter said the man had hit a traffic island at the intersection of High and South streets.
“A car turned abruptly in front of him and he drifted across while looking at it,” he said.”
Sen-Constable Paynter said when the car hit the island, the concrete had wrenched the wheel so hard it had almost detached.
“It caused the wheel to collapse,” he said.
Sen-Constable Paynter said drivers needed to be aware at all times.
“It is a timely reminder that people just can’t take their eyes off the road,” he said.
“If you take your eyes off for a split second something can happen.”
The driver was handed a penalty notice for careless driving.
