COROWA trainer Richard Freyer has his sights set on back-to-back victories in tomorrow’s $6000 Verandah Town Cup at Lockhart.
Freyer and jockey Tim Phillips successfully combined last year with Three Buddies to take out the 1400-metre picnic feature.
Three Buddies will once again form part of Freyer’s cup assault, alongside recent Jerilderie Cup placegetter From London.
Freyer found it difficult to split the stablemates leading into Lockhart’s annual race day.
“I don’t think there will be much between them,” Freyer said.
“Three Buddies has proven himself in this sort of grade and won the Lockhart and Harden cups last year.
“From London drops sharply in grade but he lacks a bit of confidence and seems to have forgot how to win.”
Three Buddies resumed from a 47-week spell at Jerilderie last month where he finished four lengths behind Social Drinker over the unsuitable trip of 1000 metres.
Freyer expected the step-up to 1400 metres tomorrow to favour the seven-year-old gelding.
“He went OK first-up but did over-race a tad,” he said.
“But getting back over seven furlongs is his go and seems to be his pet distance.”
From London is on the quick back-up after finishing near the tail of the field in a strong race at Benalla’s Cup meeting on Sunday.
The six-year-old gelding will also have to overcome the hefty burden of 72½ kilograms as he chases his first win since joining the Freyer stable late last year.
“He has to carry the grandstand but the minimum is 62 kilograms,” he said.
Phillips has once again been booked to ride Three Buddies while Blake Ryan will partner From London for the first time.
The feature race is the fifth on the six-race card and will be held at 4.10pm.
The club will hold a calcutta tonight at the Lockhart Ex-Serviceman’s Club with Essendon great Terry Daniher the guest speaker.
Entry to the raceday is $20 with under-16s free and BYO or bar available.
Gates open at noon with a jumping castle and kids corner for children.
There is also several categories and prizes up for grabs in the fashions on the field.
