POLICE said the effects of a hypoglycemic attack caused a driver to veer onto the wrong side of the Hume Freeway and crash into a tree on Friday night.
Beechworth police Leading Sen-Constable Andrew Deegan said the Sydney man, 50, was driving from Melbourne to Canberra when he suffered the reaction about two kilometres north of Springhurst at 11.45pm.
“He crossed over the median strip, crossed into oncoming south-bound lanes and went down and up an embankment and crashed into a tree,” Sen-Constable Deegan said.
He said the man was wearing his seatbelt and that, together with the activation of the driver’s airbag, probably saved his life.
Sen-Constable Deegan said the man was uninjured in the crash but was taken to Wangaratta hospital to be treated for his medical condition.
Chiltern and Beechworth police responded to the incident.
