HOWLONG golf club’s highly successful junior program is being used as a model for the rest of the Murray District Golf Association.
In a bid to attract more youngsters to the sport, the popular MYGolf program that has been running at Howlong will be rolled out across the region over the coming months.
About 70 to 80 Howlong-based youngsters were at the club on Sunday for week two of their junior program.
Officials from other MDGA clubs watched on.
MDGA president Kelvin Gilder said it wasn’t about looking after future professionals, rather looking after the sport itself.
“It’s not about coaching players to become professionals or anything like that,” Gilder explained.
“That’s the one thing we want to make clear.
“It’s about introducing the sport of golf to kids like Auskick does for the AFL and Milo Cricket.
“Not every kid that does Auskick plays AFL, do they?
“There’s a big age gap at the moment and we need to fill that gap with younger players.”
The MYGolf framework is targeted at both boys and girls aged eight to 14.
