STANDING in the forecourt of Parliament House, Cathy McGowan could not hide her grin.
Indi’s independent candidate who ousted Sophie Mirabella from the once-safe Liberal seat at the federal election had made it to Canberra — and on the International Day of Rural Women to boot.
“Democracy works,” she said.
“You get in there and have a battle and then once the decision’s made, people accept it and you get on with life. I love that.”
Ms McGowan was part of a group of 38 new lower house MPs who arrived in Canberra yesterday for a two-day induction.
Along with the other new MPs, including Corangamite’s Sarah Henderson and Hotham’s Clare O’Neil, Ms McGowan was given a “showbag” of parliamentary rules.
Ms McGowan found out just how many rules there are when she made an early slip-up — tweeting a picture of herself on the floor of the House when only accredited photographers are able to take pictures of MPs in the chamber.
It is understood Ms McGowan will not be reprimanded, given she has only just begun her training.
