THE Albury Tennis Association’s Saturday afternoon summer pennant kicked off at the weekend with a drawn match in section two ladies providing the highlight.
There were also several other tight contests on display in an entertaining afternoon’s tennis.
An unbeaten David Lake proved the difference in Thurgoona Tigers narrow 4 sets 39 games to 2 sets 36 games triumph, over St Patrick’s/Diggerville Gold in section 1 men.
He had back up in Scott Black and Graham Wurtz while Aaron Breust was a two-set winner for SPD.
A three-set haul from Ken Wurtz helped steer Forrest Hill Galahs to a 4 sets to 2 victory over Thurgoona Cats with Rodney Wurtz best.
In section one ladies, Glenly, with Danielle Sands and Alysson Moscher firing, had too much ammunition for an undermanned Forrest Hill outfit.
The closest match in section two men was between Forrest Hill Galahs and Sacred Heart, the former taking the points 5 sets to 3.
Cagey veteran Bruce Phillips was solid all day for the winners while Brendan Hoffmann gave his mountain bike a rest to be best for Sacred Heart.
Harry MacPherson-Wood and Chris Wood had convincing singles wins to set up Forrest Hill Hornet’s 5 sets to 3 salute over Wodonga Bulldogs.
Wood remained undefeated for the afternoon, while for Bulldogs, Col Mackay was a standout.
Albury Gold, Wodonga Bushrangers and Albury Blue all recorded convincing wins over Forrest Hill Diggers, Thurgoona Sharks and combined Wodonga-SPD respectively.
In the ladies, a thrilling draw was played between SPD Green and Thurgoona Bronze.
Janine Hill, Raquel Wood, Sam Chant and Jodi Pratt had Thurgoona away well, establishing a three sets to one advantage.
The last two rubbers saw Alicha King, Alice Bunyan, Emma Aldrich and Jo Graham step up to fall just short of snatching victory.
Marita Harris was outstanding all afternoon for Uiver Park, only to see her team finish five games down against Wodonga Aces. Contributions from Franchesca Dickson, Sarah Coleman, Zoe Lawson and Danni Coleman ensured a win for Aces.
Sacred Heart’s Diane McAuliffe and Chris Clark won the final set to see their team home by 6 games in an entertaining contest against Lavington.
In the final encounter, Maggie Brawn was undefeated in Glenly’s win over Thurgoona Jade, with Linda Davis best for Jade.
