Police said the man, 84, was turning right onto the Great Alpine Road from Happy Valley Road at about 10am today when his ute collided with a refrigerated transport van. 

Passers-by tried to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene. 

The driver of the van, a man aged 27, was taken to Wangaratta hospital bruised, shaken and with injuries to his ribs. 

Police, firefighters, ambulance and VicRoads staff attended the scene.

No roads have been closed but traffic is being diverted around the crash site.
